One of the more beautiful coastal cities of California, Monterey stands at an elevation of 26 feet above sea level embraced in a pleasant climate. Inhabited by pine forests and Monterey Cypress growing amongst rugged terrain, abundant marine wildlife is often visible from the shoreline romping in the turbulent Pacific currents. Under Spain and Mexico, it was the capitol of Alta California, offering the only port of entry for taxable goods in California.
